ORAL HEALTH

When should I have gum contouring?

Complete Dentures

You might be an ideal candidate for cosmetic gum contouring if you experience a “gummy smile” or have observed an uneven gum line. This procedure shapes your gums to bring balance and harmony back to your smile.

Pocket reduction

Gum disease is caused by bacterial buildup, leading to bone loss and “deep pockets” that harbor bacteria. Gum contouring helps reduce these pockets, creating a healthier environment and preventing future complications.

Remove excess tissue

Having braces can lead to gingival hyperplasia, swelling and excessive growth around the teeth. After the braces are taken off, the gums may not always return to their original state. Gum contouring can help restore harmony to your smile.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY

Gum contouring may be a cosmetic procedure or can be used to enhance oral health

Whether you’re interested in gum contouring for improving the aesthetics of your smile, preventing further gum disease, or restoring your gums after braces- it all starts with a thorough evaluation and personalized treatment plan. At 512 Smiles, we begin your journey with us by evaluating your whole oral health through dental x-rays, photos, and clinical examination. We always allow ample time to answer any questions you may have and explore your treatment options.

In some cases, the entire mouth is not affected. We may recommend localized treatment and/or generalized treatment. It is best to have a full evaluation and explanation to understand your conditions and options.

01

Examination & planning

we will assess your gums, discuss your desired outcome, and create a personalized treatment plan.

02

Local anesthesia

we use local anesthesia to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

03

Reshaping

We will carefully remove excess gum tissue and sculpt the gum line to create a more balanced and symmetrical appearance. The procedure typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour and can often be completed in a single visit.

04

Bone reshaping (if necessary)

In some cases, a small amount of bone may also be sculpted to achieve optimal and long-lasting results.

05

Finishing

After the desired gum line is achieved, the area is cleaned, and a bandage might be applied.

06

Immediate Post-Op (Day 1)

Swelling, mild discomfort, and some bleeding are normal. Applying a cold compress and taking over-the-counter pain relievers can help. Stick to soft, cool foods and avoid straws.

07

Days 2-7

Swelling and discomfort should start to decrease. Continue eating soft foods and gently brush your teeth with a soft-bristled brush, avoiding the treated area.

08

Weeks 2-3

Most healing should be complete, and you can gradually return to your normal diet and oral hygiene routine.

At 512 Smiles, our priority is your comfort, health, and the confidence that comes with your smile.
