Inlays & Onlays in Austin

At 512 Smiles in Austin, TX, we believe in conservative dentistry that restores your smile and preserves as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. If you have damaged teeth or cavities but are not ready for a full crown, inlays and onlays might be the answer. These restorative treatments are designed to repair your teeth so they blend in with your natural smile. Whether you have minor decay or more extensive damage, our team at 512 Smiles will walk you through the process and get your teeth fully functional again.

What are Inlays & Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are restorative dentistry treatments used to repair damaged or decayed teeth. They are more durable and longer lasting than fillings and are custom-made to fit your specific tooth. Inlays fill the space between the cusps (the raised points) on the chewing surface of your teeth, onlays cover one or more cusps to cover a larger area of the tooth. These are for patients who need more than a filling but not a full crown.

Inlays and onlays are made from porcelain or composite resin materials, both of which can be color-matched to your natural teeth. Porcelain inlays and onlays offer strength and a natural appearance, composite resin is a more cost-effective option. By using these materials, we can make your restored tooth look and feel like part of your natural smile.

Both inlays and onlays are a conservative approach to tooth restoration. They preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible while still providing strength and durability. This is perfect for patients who want to avoid the more invasive dental crowns and still repair their teeth.

Inlays & Onlays at 512 Smiles

At 512 Smiles, our inlays and onlays procedure is simple and takes only two visits to our office. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Assessment

During your first visit, we will examine your tooth and determine if an inlay or onlay is the right solution for you. We may take X-rays to assess the extent of the damage and make sure your tooth is healthy enough for the procedure.

Step 2: Tooth Preparation

After we determine the right solution, we will prepare your tooth by removing decay or damaged tooth structure. We take great care to preserve as much of your healthy tooth as possible during this process.

Step 3: Impressions

Once your tooth is prepared, we take an impression of the area to create your custom inlay or onlay. This ensures the restoration will fit perfectly within or over your tooth. The impression is sent to a dental lab where your inlay or onlay is made.

Step 4: Temp Filling

While your inlay or onlay is being made, we will place a temporary filling over your tooth so you can eat and speak comfortably until your permanent restoration is ready.

Step 5: Final Placement

On your second visit, your custom inlay or onlay will be ready. We will remove the temp filling and bond the new restoration to your tooth with a strong dental adhesive. Once we make sure it fits perfectly, we will polish the restoration for a smooth finish.

Our Inlays & Onlays Services

At 512 Smiles, we offer custom inlays and onlays to restore your teeth and overall dental health. Our team will assess your specific needs and recommend the best solution for your tooth restoration. Whether you have decay, damage, or old metal fillings that need to be replaced, our goal is to get your teeth fully functional again naturally and comfortably. Here are the types of inlays we offer:

Porcelain Inlays

Porcelain inlays are made from high-quality ceramic material. They fit perfectly in the space within your tooth and are for patients who want a durable, natural-looking restoration. Porcelain inlays blend in with your existing teeth and are long-lasting.

Composite Resin Inlays

Made from composite resin material, these inlays are more cost-effective than porcelain. Composite resin inlays are strong and can be color-matched to your natural teeth. Perfect for patients who want an affordable solution without sacrificing appearance.

Porcelain Onlays

If your tooth needs more repair, a porcelain onlay covers a larger area of the tooth. It’s great for restoring the biting surface of your tooth and can cover one or more cusps. Like inlays, porcelain onlays are durable and natural-looking.

Composite Resin Onlays

Composite resin onlays offer the same benefits as porcelain but at a lower cost. Perfect for patients who need a larger restoration but still want to maintain a natural look and feel.

Inlays & Onlays Benefits

Inlays and onlays have several benefits over other restorative dentistry options. One of the biggest advantages is that they are a more conservative approach than dental crowns, which require more of the natural tooth structure to be removed. Here are a few:

Preservation of Healthy Tooth Structure

Inlays and onlays preserve more of your natural tooth structure than full crowns. This conservative approach helps keep your teeth strong while still addressing decay or damage.

Durability

Made from porcelain or composite resin, inlays and onlays are more durable than metal fillings. They provide long-term protection for your teeth and can last for many years with proper care.

Natural Appearance

Both porcelain and composite resin inlays and onlays can be color-matched to your natural teeth, so they are almost invisible. Your restored tooth will blend in with the rest of your smile.

Custom Fit

Inlays and onlays are custom-made to fit the exact shape of your tooth. This means a snug fit, so bacteria and decay can’t form underneath the restoration.

Full Function

Inlays and onlays restore your tooth to full function so you can chew, bite, and speak normally again. They strengthen your tooth without compromising its appearance or structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What’s the difference between inlays and onlays?

Inlays fill the space between the cusps of your tooth, and onlays cover one or more of the cusps. Onlays are used when more of the tooth surface needs to be restored.

Q. How long do inlays and onlays last?

Inlays and onlays are very durable and can last 10-20 years or more with proper care. The longevity depends on the material used and your oral hygiene.

Q. Are inlays better than fillings?

Inlays and onlays are more durable and longer lasting than fillings. They provide a better fit and more strength, especially for larger cavities or decay areas.

Q. Is the inlay or onlay procedure painful?

The procedure is not painful, we use local anesthesia to numb the area before treatment. You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but most patients report little to no discomfort.

Q. How do I take care of my inlays and onlays?

You take care of inlays and onlays the same as your natural teeth. Brushes, floss, and regular dental checkups are essential to keep your restoration long-lasting.
